A pre-Prohibition style rye from Kentucky’s Woodford Reserve Distillery.

Before Prohibition, Kentucky rye was made with only a little more rye than the legal minimum, giving whiskeys that sat between the fire of a modern high-rye and the sweetness of bourbon. Woodford Reserve’s rye follows that older style. The mash bill is 53% rye, with corn and malted barley making up the rest, and it is distilled, matured and bottled at the distillery in Versailles, Kentucky.

The result has the spice you want from a rye: black pepper, clove and cedar. Woodford’s familiar honey and orchard-fruit sweetness rounds it out. It’s bold enough to stand up in a cocktail and balanced enough to sip neat.

How to serve

• Neat or with a drop of water, to open up the fruit
• In a Manhattan: rye, sweet vermouth and a dash of bitters, stirred and served with a cherry
• In an Old Fashioned or a Sazerac, where the rye spice cuts through the sugar

• Nose: Black pepper, cedar and cinnamon spice, softened by pear, apple and a hint of marzipan
