Château d'Yquem - Sauternes 1980 75cl
Château d'Yquem 1980 Description
A year that was far colder than average, with a correspondingly late harvest. This began on the 20th of October with a "tidying-up pass" to remove any berries affected by sour rot. An easterly wind in early November finally concentrated the grapes and picking could start in earnest. Patience was rewarded with very satisfactory sugar levels and enough good lots to be able to make a beautiful wine.
Wine Enthusiast: 98 Points
The aromas are so rich and powerful, with great ripe apricots. There are honey, spice and beautiful sweet spiced pears. This is an extraordinary wine in an extraordinary year in Sauternes. —Roger Voss,

The 1980 was particularly impressive for the vintage. It was superbly focused and beautiful on the nose, with sugared lemons, tropical fruit and maple syrup character. Full-bodied and thick, yet very fine, it was extremely sweet and long.
