Which Spot Whiskey Should You Buy? Green, Yellow, Red, Blue and Gold Explained

The Spot family, bottled for Mitchell & Son of Dublin, is the most collected Single Pot Still range in Irish whiskey — and one of the easiest to get lost in. Five colours, three wine finishes, one cask-strength release and prices from about €55 to €670. Here is the honest two-minute answer, based on the whiskeys as they stand in our own records.

Start here: Green Spot (about €55)

The original and still the reference point: no age statement (built on 7–10 year old whiskeys), 40%, matured in bourbon and sherry casks. Orchard fruit, barley, gentle spice. If you have never had a Single Pot Still whiskey, start with Green Spot — or try the 5cl sample first.

The step up: Yellow Spot 12 (about €80)

Twelve years, 46%, and the addition of Spanish Malaga casks alongside bourbon and sherry. Sweeter and more exotic — honey, peaches, crème brûlée. The most popular upgrade in the range. Yellow Spot 12 · sample it for €7.

The wine finishes: Léoville Barton, Montelena & Quail's Gate (€70–€195)

Core Green Spot given serious wine casks: Château Léoville Barton (Bordeaux) is drier and more structured; Château Montelena (Napa Zinfandel) is brighter — pomegranate, cranberry, maraschino cherry. Both at 46%, both available as 5cl drams. The rarest of the trio is the limited Quail's Gate — finished in Pinot Noir casks from the Canadian vineyard of the same name: woody, spicy, ripe red fruits. Its 5cl dram is the sensible first step at a fraction of the €195 bottle.

The powerhouse: Blue Spot 7 Cask Strength

Seven years old, non-chill filtered, bottled at natural cask strength with Madeira casks in the mix. The biggest flavour per euro in the family — when stock allows. The 5cl sample is the smart way in.

The collectors: Red Spot 15 & Gold Spot 9

Red Spot 15 (€140) crowns the classic range — fifteen years across bourbon, Oloroso and Sicilian Marsala casks. Gold Spot 9 (51.4%, non-chill filtered, four cask types including Bordeaux and port) was the anniversary release that became a collector fixture.
